FAQs on Applying
back to "Adopt"
We list dogs that are available for adoption in our available Shibas area.

Here are some frequently asked questions about the adoption process.

  1. How do we get considered in the adoption process?

    • You must first fill out an adoption application in order to get on our adoption list.

    • You will be placed on a wait list once your application is received and reviewed.

  2. How long do applicants remain on the waitlist and how long will applicants have to wait for a rescue?

Waitlist times vary in duration and can take several weeks to many months to find the right match. We encourage applicants to update us from time to time on the status of your situation to let us know if you would like to remain on the adoption wait list.

  3. If we are first in sending in an application on a dog do we get first priority?

Placement is based on the best match between fostered Shiba and adopter. Not every family is perfect for every Shiba. We do not adopt out Shibas on a first come first serve basis.

If there is a particular Shiba that strikes your fancy be sure to let us know in the application comments section.

  4. We ask that applicants be patient during the search, selection, and evaluation process. As with any application process it takes time to work through to final candidates on a particular dog.

When a Shiba comes into MASR foster care, we go through our active applications to determine if there is a good match. We then contact applicants to see if they are interested in the particular dog.

  5. What happens when we are selected as a final candidates on a particular Shiba fostered by MASR?

    • A home visit interview is required for anyone who is selected to adopt from MASR.

      Home Visit? What's That?

This is where a Rescuer will meet with your family in your home to discuss the Shiba Inu breed, and this will be your chance to interact with a Shiba. We expect that all family members be present during the home vist so that we can answer any questions you may have

    • What paperwork or documents are required to finalize the adoption process?

If you are renting, you will be required to provide a copy of your rental agreement or other paperwork from your landlord indicating that you can have a dog at your residence. OR If you own your home, we will need to review your deed or mortgage statement verifying your ownership and current address

    • What does an adoption contract look like?

If all goes well during the home vist and interview(s), then as a final phase you will be required to sign an adoption contract. You will be given an opportunity to review a copy of an adoption contract during the home visit or final meeting prior to taking your dog home.

    • What is the adoption fee for a MASR shiba?

At the time of adoption contract signing the adoption fee will be required. (Due to increases in Veterinary fees, MASR adoption fee as of 2007 is $350 for dogs under 1 year of age and $300 for dogs 1 year of age or over (unless otherwise noted). There is a $25 rebate upon proof of obedience training within 6 months of adoption.)

Special Note on Courtesy Listed Dogs

What does courtesy listed mean?

Courtesy Listing, means that a particular dog is not being cared for by MASR nor has MASR evaluated the dog listed and therefore can not provide verification as to validity of the information posted.

Please be sure to investigate all aspects of Courtesy Listed animals available for adoption, including the suitability of the dog for your personal situation. By proceeding in Courtesy Listed adoptions you, hereby release MASR from any liability in connection with the courtesy listed dog.

If you adopt an animal that is "courtesy listed", you will be obligated to work out adoption arrangements and fees privately with the owner or foster you are in contact with. MASR will not be involved in nor responsible for the negotiations and transactions that occur between adopter and owner of "courtesy listed" animals.

However, we will do our best to help act as a liaison to bring together adoption applicants and those wishing to surrender and also provide information to assist you in the adoption or surrender process.

Do you have to fill out an application for "Courtesy Listed" dogs?

Yes, an application should be submitted unless the shiba you are interested in is listed with a shelter. Shelter dogs require direct responses to the facility adoption coordinator.
